My Students

I work in a low-income school. All my students come with different challenge they face each day. Challenges range from not eating dinner the previous night to not having a pair of clean clothes to wear. Even though students face these challenges every day, they always come to school ready to learn. They know that in our classroom, everyone is welcome and loved.

In our class, we focus on learning powers (collaborating, persevering, curious, self-mange and reflect).

We use our learner powers every day, and face challenges we may come across and my students come ready to face those challenges. They use their learner powers to become independent learners and problem solvers both inside and out of the classroom. We also have been working on Toolbox Tools to help us regulate our feelings. Students will learn 12 different tools and hand signal for each tool.

My Project

In my classroom students work on counting money and how important it is to budget for needs and wants. Students have the opportunity to earn money for showing our learner behaviors and following school rules. Students can also lose money if they break any of the school rules or not showing our learner powers.

At the end of each month students have the opportunity to spend their money on our classroom store.

Before students can shop at the store, they have to pay their bills. Students are "renting" their desk and chair for the year. It is just like paying a house bill or rent! Students also have classroom jobs and get paid for their job. After that students have the ability to spend their money at our store. Store includes coupons to use in the classroom and different toys and candy. Students can spend as much or as little as they like. These toys will help keep my students interest in store. It provides them will a little bit of everything. My students look forward to shopping day each month!

I want to teach my students about their future and how important it is to save their money. In the real world, we have bills to pay and we earn money from working. That is what my classroom is all about. Students have bills to pay and get paid for their job. I also want to teach my students about consequences (i.e. getting money taken away=paying fines).
