My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California. We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals and almost all of our students are students of color and English Learners.

We are a 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th-grade special education classroom.

My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills and self-management. Some students have very limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence and ownership at an early age.

My Project

There are many things I miss about being in the classroom in person with my students but one thing that I know my students and I miss is our classroom store. I use classroom economy with my students. I have found it to be a great way to reward students for their hard work, effort, persistence, and kindness. As a bonus, they also get to learn about financial responsibility. My students get the opportunity to earn classroom money and go shopping on Friday's at "Ms. Kim's store." Some typical items you'll find at Ms. Kim's store are high interest items like snacks, treats, and cool little knick knacks. My students know that as soon as I pull out my cash register, they know to start counting their money to prepare for their shopping trip #treatyoself

My students are on the Autism Spectrum so they need explicit and multiple opportunities to learn about life skills such as earning money, counting money, saving, spending, and how to purchase items at a store.

They get to practice of all these skills because of our classroom economy system. We missed out on a lot of in person interactions during 2020-2021 so I am more than excited to see my students again and have my shop up and running.
