My Students

My classroom is home to 26 incredible first graders. Our arts-focused K-8 public school is located in a predominantly low-income and urban community with a large bilingual population, which presents both challenges and opportunities.

My students are incredibly curious, active, quirky, and compassionate, and have diverse interests, backgrounds, and needs.

We spend our days together singing, asking questions, reading, writing, discussing, working with numbers, learning about our world, and striving to make our classroom community more inclusive, supportive, and kind.

My Project

Our classroom is equipped with low, shallow bookshelves that easily topple over and cannot accommodate our growing library. These bookshelves will be hold our leveled library (books at students' just-right reading levels) as well as our social studies, science, and picture book collections. Plastic clip-top bins will help us store out-of-season library books and materials for differentiated literacy and math centers

Strong and sturdy bookshelves and bins will support student independence, allowing them to access materials safely and efficiently.

With these materials, students will be able to select and access the supplies they need to learn throughout the day. In addition to increasing student independence, these materials will also reduce the time that I spend distributing and managing supplies, allowing me to do more one-on-one and small group work with my students.
