Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being an adolescent. But instead of having the average teenager struggles, you have experienced violence and have to leave your friends, family, and country to make the journey to the U.S., where you don't know the language or culture and are living with new family members. Coming from India, Vietnam, China, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Palestine, American Samoa, and the Philippines, my students have painful, and often traumatic pasts, but together they support each other and maintain hope for a better future.

Many of my students risked their lives for the "American Dream," and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best selves and achieve their dreams here.

These immigrant youth want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while the country is polarized around immigration, I think everyone can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential. I have been teaching recent immigrants since 2015 and their resilience and determination continues to impress and encourage me to always do my best for them.

My Project

The Frankenstein graphic novels will be used in the Spooky Stories unit, which coincides with Halloween. The pictures in graphic novels help students access and infer meaning and also increases their overall feelings of comfort and joy for reading.

Graphic novels are extremely engaging for students, especially English language learners.

The headphones will be used primarily with my lowest level of English learners. I am implementing stations and one includes using specific websites on the Chromebooks to practice and increase their English skills, such as Quizlet and Duolingo. Students need to practice both listening and speaking skills while completing these activities.

There are two other books included that are for higher-level learners and have common themes of being an immigrant in the U.S. All of my students are recent immigrants and can relate to these stories in some way. Having literature that is related to their experiences not only is motivating for them and allows them to feel that their own stories are shared with others, but it also provides students with more ways of interacting and connecting with a text.
