Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom needs furniture. I teach a 3rd grade class in the South Bronx. My classroom usually consists of 20-25 bilingual children. The books are in both Spanish and English and vary in genres. Currently some of the books are difficult to access because of how they are arranged within the classroom. Many of the books are packed in crates and boxes, thus making the books difficult to display (for selection) and access. The reason libraries are effective is because books are categorized, organized and easily viewed. I would like to offer the same kind of reading environment to my classroom students. Currently the furniture in my classroom is unsafe and unusable. I would like my children to have an environment more conducive to reading and doing group work. I would like to create a library system that is organized, easily accessible and logical for my students. I hope to accomplish this by having sturdy bookshelves, cubbies and chairs. My children can have a relaxing and functional place to read and research. At this moment my children use library furniture that is weak and unstable. Most of the times I have to remind my students to be careful with the edges of the shelves. I feel very uncomfortable letting my students read at the library without my supervision. I constantly have to make sure that books are not falling. In addition, in order for my kids to get access to ALL the books in the library, I have to open boxes and move the crates. This time consuming task takes away from the time I could spend reading to and with my students.
