Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classes consist of a very diverse group of 7th grade students, from a variety of backgrounds. More than 75% of my students are eligible for free lunch. Most importantly, they are very bright and eager to learn.
The students in my classes are working hard towards a high-stakes ELA test, and they need all the resources they can get in order to help them reach their goals and achieve academic success.
They enjoy facilitating group discussions and showing off their close-reading skills. My students are great collaborators, and together they form a tight-knit classroom community that I am extremely proud of.
My Project
I teach ninety 7th grade students, at least 75% of which receive free or reduced-price lunches. Despite their various struggles, they arrive each day ready to do the best they can with what they have. As their teacher, I want to give them every opportunity to succeed in an increasingly competitive world, and technology is an essential part of that world. My students are in great need a new color printer/copier to make their vast array of classroom project ideas a reality and increase efficiency during day-to-day activities. This printer would benefit all of my students since they would all get to print from it, and most of them do not have access to a printer at home. There are ten Chromebooks in our room and one very old printer that no longer functions properly. This color printer would add a new dimension to the students' work, giving them the opportunity to create truly vivid, engaging projects using virtually any available resource, online or otherwise.
From comic-strips to book reports, vocabulary maps to argumentative essays, the ability to add colorful, engaging visuals to their projects would be an extremely powerful creative, and motivational, tool for students who are accustomed to doing things strictly in black and white.
Furthermore, a new printer would dramatically increase the level of efficiency in the classroom. Students who rely on me to print their work could now do so on their own. "Emergency" printing tasks that would normally require me, or student volunteers, to run to all corners of our five-story school building could now be done immediately without distraction, and without interrupting student learning. My students aspire to do great things, and a more colorful, engaging, and efficient classroom printing system will help them reach their goals.
