My Students

I am a school social worker at an elementary school in an urban school district. My students come from diverse backgrounds. The majority of students at our school qualify to receive free or reduced-priced lunch.

Our students face many barriers to achieving academic success.

Many of our students face significant challenges including experiencing or witnessing trauma. A lack of coping skills can lead to challenging behaviors that have to be addressed at school. Often, our students need assistance with managing self-control and anger, strengthening social skills, and building self-esteem.

My Project

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process by which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These organizational supplies will allow students to easily find SEL items in my office, which they can use for self-regulation. This will cut down on time spent looking for items, instead allowing me to focus on students and their emotional needs

The lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has made SEL even more imperative in the school setting and students will be needing more resources.

The bulletin board will allow me to display mental health resources and SEL tips and the rolling carts and document holders will allow for additional resource displays. The emotion magnet and booklet will empower students to identify how they are feeling and the bins will allow the carts to hold additional SEL activities and sensory items for students to help them regulate their emotions.
