My Project

I am requesting a class set of the novel Refugee. After a seven year hiatus in other content areas, this year I have returned to teaching reluctant readers to love books, and I couldn't be more excited about it. While my students are hardworking and have a strong desire to learn, they come from diverse backgrounds, and many of them need additional supports, high-interest texts to read, and a teacher with a boat-load of enthusiasm.

After learning that I would be a reading teacher again, I began consuming book after book, and after I read Refugee by Alan Gratz, I knew I wanted to read it with my class.

The book follows the story of three refugees: Josef, a Jewish boy in 1930s Nazi Germany, Isabel, a Cuban girl in 1994, and Mahmoud is a Syrian boy in 2015. The book is full of history, suspense, and literary elements. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and deeply engaged in all three narrator's stories. It allows for a research unit pertaining to each of the three historical and cultural settings.

And, even better, Gratz expertly weave the stories together, leaving the reader shocked in the end. I cannot wait to see the look on my students' faces when they read the ending of the book. I would love to be able to share this book with them.

The stories help create empathy amongst the students as well. They are able to understand the refugee story better. When stories like the ones in the book hit the media, they will be more likely to think twice about what's going on in the world, and how we treat the people who are directly affected.
