This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is the best! I teach a class of 10 students with special needs at a high-needs, public elementary school in San Francisco. My students' disabilities range from autism and dyslexia to deaf or hard of hearing. They are absolute rockstars and work hard every day to make themselves, their families and me incredibly proud.

I am a new teacher and am working to establish a structured, safe and fun classroom.

Your kindness will mean the difference between "making it" and succeeding for these great kids and myself as a new special education teacher.

My Project

I am a new Special Education teacher building a space that prioritizes safety, consistency and fun. This project will help provide my students with a consistent morning routine: calendar time, counting, and resources for choice play and/or movement breaks, including some tools I need in order to model/support their understanding of these skills. My students' moods and days benefit greatly given choice time in the morning, but because I am a new teacher, my tools/toys/resources are limited.

The toys and activities in this project will provide meaningful, fun and engaging choice activities for my students who are learning about how to engage with and play safely with others while also providing us with some basic classroom necessities.

My goal is to ensure my students can choose from activities they love, such as building with LEGO bricks, playing with insect/animal models, a cash register and pretend food, or jumbo alphabet mats, to name a few. These activities are fun, but also build academic and social capacity as students play with one another. This is particularly critical after COVID-19 school closures, as students were restricted from spending time with their peers in these important ways.

Other choice activities specifically target students' sensory needs, providing safe ways of moving and exercising so that they can regulate their bodies. The Activity Mats included in this project will provide students who need targeted movement in a structured and fun way.

I would also like to buy caterpillars this year so that we can learn about the metamorphosis process. We will need a terrarium for this activity!

Finally, I have included basic necessities for the year - sanitizing wipes and tissue.
