My Students

I teach visual and performing arts for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. My classroom revolves around differentiation and structure. Everyday as we explore through the arts ways to express language and communication; ideas and emotions, I see my students becoming more ready for the real world.

I teach K-2 in a small special needs school .

Our school shares a building with another general Ed. Elementary school, however we are two different schools and our students do not usually share spaces at the same time. Our students have varying special needs, as a result learning in the classroom must be a multi-sensory experience with structure . As all of our students learn in different ways, I would like to enrich the classroom with tools for them to explore and find multiple modalities to learn the necessary academic and life skills to function in the school, at home and in the real world.

My Project

My students need more sensory materials in the classroom. For example, during musical warm ups, we use tools such as shakers to practice and identify rhythmic patterns in songs. Likewise, when exploring various elements of visual arts, we use tools such as paint, playdough and floor markers, for tactile and kinesthetic exploration of these concepts.

Donations to this project will make a difference in the lives of students with ASD who have just started out in school.

If we can help my students get started the right way; with the most appropriate tools in our classroom to help them learn and communicate better, then it will make all the difference in their many, many more years of school to come.
