Second grade at my school is filled with excitement, curiosity, and hands-on learning. My teaching philosophy is driven from the Maya Angelou quote, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
I have twenty-eight second graders who come from a beautiful array of educational backgrounds and cultures.
They are eager to learn, are filled with excitement, and love coming to school. Community is key in our classroom. My school is the oldest school in the district, with a large population of free/reduced lunch students.
My Project
Each of these materials will be used in different ways.
This year I have decided that once the bell rings each morning, the students will play an interactive math game instead of completing a typical worksheet. This will keep the student engaged, be more eco-friendly, and help practice their math automaticity. Dice is often an important tool in these games.
In second grade letter building is extremely important for students to separate out the sounds in words. By using magnetic alphabet letters, I will work in small groups to help students find success in establishing phonemic awareness.
The plastic book bags will be used by each student to collect their individual leveled bags. The students will retrieve these bags from a hook in the room and visit our classroom library to choose a variety of books to keep at their reading spot. This bag will be used to organizational purposes and for students to feel ownership over their reading materials.
Since this will be my first year as a classroom teacher, I do not have the funds to purchase all the necessary items to make a stellar learning environment.
These items will not only make all my hopes and dreams for my first year of teaching come true, but they will make my classroom a place where students love school and the engaging and kinesthetic materials that comes with each lesson.
