My Students

Children ask the best questions and are constantly seeking information about the world around them. Keeping up with their curiosity is challenging! Providing regular access to stimulating informational texts would help keep my classroom stocked with a great selection of nonfiction material.

My students are caring, interesting, and curious learners at a public elementary school in Maine.

We are a multi-age 3rd/4th grade classroom and the students stay with me for two years. Our school is a welcoming and caring community that works hard to model respect and citizenship. Students and adults come to school everyday excited and ready to teach and learn.

My Project

With the Common Core emphasis on teaching informational text, providing access to a wide variety of nonfiction reading is necessary. Most classrooms are overflowing with great children's literature and novels, but many, including my own, lack a good selection of interesting nonfiction texts. Children's magazines are a great source of informational texts. The articles are short, interesting, and appropriate for children. They often use a variety of different text structures and text features so they make excellent practice passages for working with nonfiction. In fact, many reading selections on state tests are very close in structure and format to magazine articles. We will use these magazines in a variety of ways, but mainly to teach reading informational texts.

Bringing magazines into my classroom will have a huge impact on student learning and attitudes towards reading informational texts.

They will have access to texts that they normally wouldn't see at home or in school, and it brings reading back into their hands rather than online (reading online is important too - but balance is key, especially at this developmental stage).
