My Students

I have a diverse and amazing population of students who make my everyday "job" into an amazing learning journey. I am on that learning journey together with my 9th and 10th graders.

Together, with the 140-ish students that I teach every day, we create a home in the four walls we inhabit.

My school works every day at nurturing the diverse interests of the amazing students we serve, despite the obstacles life throws at us.

Our district is a low SES district with more than 65% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Many students treat our school as home because the place they go to after 3:30 doesn't provide what a home should. My goal is to help create the learning opportunities that these amazing students deserve and not let the poverty mindset prevent my students from reaching their potential.

My Project

I want to create a classroom library of amazing, engaging texts. The books I've chosen with Rosie Book Choice Awards and student recommendations in mind.

Students will not read what they are not interested in.

Studies show that students should be reading 60 minutes a day, every day. I need to put books that students will read within the easy grasp of my kids.

The books that I get from this grant will go to my classroom library and will impact the students I teach every day and help increase literacy in my room. Students need to be close to the high-interest texts that will give them the impetus to read.
