This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students that I have the opportunity to serve are energetic, creative and resilient! They come from one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in the city we live in. Despite facing homelessness, food insecurity, parent imprisonment and all the other challenges faced by students and families in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods my students come to school excited to learn and ready to engage.
Engaged students are successful.
Teaching first grade for the first time ever this year I wish to develop a true love for reading! First grade is critical and foundational for student success. I'm looking forward to teaching a brand new group of scholars and preparing them to excel in all that they aspire to do!
My Project
Judy Blume, The Babysitters Club, Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps are all book titles and authors that I think of when I think about reading as a child. Reading was always fun for me! Even now I have an adult word wall in my home for when I come across unfamiliar vocabulary. This is the lifelong love relationship that I wish to develop in my students. Students are more likely to read leisurely when they feel confident, are reading about an interest and books are easily accessible.
Your support will help to build a classroom library that is rich, diverse and inviting!
