My new school seems AWESOME! 95% of the students come from economically disadvantaged families. They are almost all second language learners. The district provides free breakfast, lunch and a snack to all my students (how great is this??!).
Most importantly I know my students are all curious and capable of learning.
They want to be loved and supported and I cannot wait to cheer them on this year as they meet BIG goals and dream BIG dreams!
I am returning to the classroom after an 8 year break during which I was a teacher coach, principal and then spent 1 year in the private sector. I cannot wait to return to working in a public school - it truly is where my heart is! I am in a new state and a new district. My previous district was in a wealthy area where we had an abundance of resource and parent support, so this will be a big change!
My Project
My students arrive in less than two weeks and I have NO classroom library. I will be getting books that are part of our English language arts curriculum (sets for small group instruction, teacher read alouds, etc), but my students need to fall in love with reading by choosing their own books for independent reading everyday!
This project will make sure my students have quality books and lots of choice.
Reading development at second grade is critical. They are not only learning to read, but loving to read. I want a library that lets the students learn how to explore lots of genres and topics and expand their horizons about reading and the world.
