Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach ELA (reading component) to self-contained boys in grades 7 and 8th. My main struggle with my students is building interest and stamina when reading. My students struggle moving up reading levels due to not having interesting books and dealing with a very limited variety of books.

My students are mostly 7th and 8th-grade boys who love to only talk about movies, games, sports, girls and music.

There are usually about 11-13 students in the classroom so we become very close. They struggle with obtaining in interest in reading due to low reading levels and not having interesting books to work with. They say these books are for babies or boring. They do read articles about sports, celebrities, etc. better via computer or if they are allowed to read while listening to their personal music using headphones.

My Project

If my students had access to a brand new library with a variety of books, it would open many opportunities. For example, book clubs could be created because they would have access to series. Creating book clubs would help build stamina for each student and push their thinking when discussing. Also, my students would be able to have a variety of books to choose from for independent reading, including my low-level students. If I had high-interest, low-level books my low-level students would not be left out. Last but not least, my students would not feel left out from the rest of the grade due to each classroom having they're very own library. I would be able to create book partnerships as well and that would provide more support for students to move up their reading levels and hold them accountable.

Besides making book partnerships, book clubs, independent reading, my students will have interest and a love for reading.

Once, my students have a love for reading because they have access to high-interest low-level books, there is room for building stamina. Building stamina when reading is very important, especially when my students need to sit for a 3-hour state exam where they have to read 4-5 passages at a time.
