My Students

Books are used in our classroom everyday! They love to read! Books that are in the "book hospital" for repair are not in students' hands. Our well-loved books are literally "falling apart at the seams", and need to be replaced with newer versions.

I have a class of 21 students.

We are one of 5 second grade classrooms in a school of 500. Our literacy instruction includes students reading independently for 20+ minutes everyday. This is in addition to the whole group and small group reading instruction that they receive. That's A LOT of reading! Our classrooms get a minimal or no budget with which to buy books for the classroom.

My Project

Oooohh!!! Children LOVE new books! The shiny new covers, the crack of the spine the first time it's opened. What better way to inspire children to read than to share with them so many new classroom books?!? No more ratty, torn books where the cover is falling off and the pages have been taped back in so many times, that the book barely closes. The sturdy new plastic book bins (instead of cardboard) will help to keep the books protected and organized year after year!

Reading is the cornerstone of a successful education!
