My Students

Have you ever seen a young child who is fascinated with books and stories? Reading and stories are not only fun, but hugely important in developing language skills. My students need interesting, and level-appropriate books to explore and continue developing their language skills in French.

My students are a diverse group of middle school students (seventh and eighth grade) who live in Alaska.

Our school is a Title I neighborhood and lottery school that works to integrate science across curriculum. We have a small student body and small staff, but we do amazing things!

My Project

Many teenagers do not read for pleasure, yet research consistently shows the importance of reading for literacy development. Simply put, those who read more have broader vocabulary, better use of grammar, stronger reading comprehension skills, etc. I want to use my class library as a tool to help my students jump start their interest in reading and their progress in French through free reading sessions. To do this well, it is important that students are able to choose their own reading material (on topics that interest them) and that the books use words that they understand. My students are all in first and second year French, so for the most part basic stories with familiar concepts and illustrations will make the language more accessible to them. Other books on my list are slightly more advanced in order to provide opportunities for my quick learners to push their language skills while also exploring unique cultural perspectives.

In addition, my students have expressed an interest in having time to read French books of their choosing and you would be surprised how excited they get about kid's books and children's stories, even in middle school!
