Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My English classroom is a space designed to be safe and rigorous for students. My students, mostly 8th graders in Bushwick, learn the skills that they'll need to shine in High School.

I challenge my students every day and every day my students rise up to the challenge and surprise me, often teaching me something in the process.

While my school is located in Bushwick and many of the students live in the neighborhood, there are also many students that commute from Bedstuy, Canarsie, and Ridgewood.

My Project

My students, like many others, are reluctant readers. When I ask my young scholars why they don't like to read, the response is always the same: "Reading is boring." My students do not have access to literature that reflects their diverse cultures, their life experiences, or even their interests. To become better writers, students, and responsible global citizens, my students need to become frequent readers and I hope to incentivize and motivate my students to read more frequently by presenting them with literature that my students can actually relate to. I want to show my students that reading, aside from its educational value, can be fun. I am requesting a broad range of literature titles to enhance our classroom library.
