My Students

My students are looking to expand their reading comprehension and analysis through new pieces of literature. Working in a low-income school, with over 85% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch in the East Village of Manhattan, New York, I have students from diverse backgrounds fill my classroom on a daily basis. As teachers, we know the importance of reading whenever we are given the opportunity to do so. Upon entering my classroom this school year, I was lucky enough that the previous teacher left all of her leveled books for my students to enjoy. However, my students have now had the chance to engage with all the books displayed in our library. I’m fortunate enough that my school provides classroom teachers with enough space in the classroom to create a strong library, so it is time to fill the shelves with engaging books!

Making reading enjoyable for students is critical as they progress through their academic lives.

Reading is the foundation to learning and we must be able to engage with different genres and texts to connect to our reading and the experiences shared within the text.

My Project

My students reading levels vary along Fountas and Pinnell reading level chart, these books would ultimately be beneficial for all of the students as they move toward that next reading level. Making reading enjoyable for students is critical as they progress through their academic lives. Reading is the foundation to learning and we must be able to engage with different genres and texts to connect to our reading and the experiences shared within the text.

The students who fill my classroom are eager to learn.

Whenever there is a moment of down time, or completion of a task, students are always reading. With the books I currently have, I see that students feel disengaged and have no motivation to want to read. Often, I find them staring at the clock waiting for the next task so they can utilize their energy and focus on a different task. These books will go to great use every single day. As stated, the student reading level in my classroom varies and these books will help increase vocabulary, word identification and pronunciation, and so much more. Help me, help my students become stronger readers with the requested materials! As a new teacher, in a small school in the heart of New York City, our funding is limited and we (my students and I) appreciate all the help we can get!
