My Students

I work in a Title I school in Brooklyn, NY which is facing budgetary constraints, and I have many reluctant, low-level readers who just haven't met the right book yet.

Despite the fact that a large percentage of my students come from low income households and face a variety of challenges both personal and academic, they still come to school everyday, hoping to reach their goals.

With an abundant selection of fresh and contemporary book options, their motivation to read vastly increases. They deserve a library that meets their needs and interests.

My Project

In sixth grade, independent reading is a vital part of our curriculum. Students choose books, read them silently, share thoughts with partners, and respond in notebooks about topics related to their reading.

A main goal of my sixth grade students is to improve their reading skills.

Whenever we receive a small allotment of new books that meets their interests and levels, they pounce on them, reading them in record times. Over the years, most of these cherished books have become damaged, or they never found their way back to the classroom. What's left is a sparse selection of old, dirty, tattered books that inspire no one.

The children's desire to improve is still there, but their choices are so limited. Reading is important, as the more they read, the more their reading skills improve. Reading also adds to their vocabulary and increases their focus and analytical skills.

This year's sixth grade would benefit from an updated and inspiring library with clean, in tact books, as reading daily helps in all areas of study. Please help me provide fresh and vibrant reading opportunities for my deserving students by donating to my cause. Thank you!
