Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

A significant number of our 10th-grade students have not read a novel in its entirety, which presents a critical challenge for their academic growth. Our small charter school, which serves students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, lacks a library, limiting access to enriching literature beyond textbooks. For many of our students, the public library is not a viable resource due to the time and expense of taking a bus. As a result, reading is often deprioritized in their homes, leaving the classroom as the primary space to nurture their literacy skills and foster a love for reading.

The goal of this project is to provide students with access to novels and other engaging reading materials in the classroom to reignite their interest in reading.

By cultivating a culture of reading, we aim to improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills—essential competencies for success in college, careers, and life. When students can explore diverse stories and perspectives, they develop empathy and an ability to engage with complex ideas, which are key to navigating today’s world.

This initiative is not just about teaching literacy; it’s about creating equitable opportunities for learning. For many of our students, this may be their first chance to experience the joy of completing a novel or discussing its themes with their peers. These moments can inspire a lifelong love of reading, transforming how they see themselves as learners and individuals.

By prioritizing access to literature within our classrooms, we hope to break the cycle of limited exposure to reading, empowering students to become confident, capable readers. This investment in their education is an investment in their futures, ensuring they are prepared to meet the demands of higher education and the workforce.
