My Students

Our second grade girls and boys attend a public school in a large urban city. It is a Title I school with more than 60% of students receiving reduced rate or free lunch. The students come from a number of multicultural backgrounds. The children come to school each day enthusiastically ready to learn and thrive. Friendship and kindness is valued in our classroom. Respect and responsibility are valued in our school. Our school believes every child can learn to their full potential and our teachers and staff support their journey through a strong education.

My Project

New classroom library books will give students more opportunities to read. The children are motivated to read when they find a book of their interest.

The move from reading picture books to chapter books begin in early elementary grades.

Higher-level vocabulary in chapter books support their overall learning in the classroom. When children become interested in an author's series, they have a drive to find the author's next book to continue reading.

They need to practice reading to improve their reading. When they have a choice of new fresh books to read, the practice of reading become a pleasure of reading. And students that are confident readers are successful in school.
