Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Real life experience adds multi-level educational values to adolescent minds. I have led groups of students, many times a year, into the wooded areas north of NYC to give them real world experience with the topics they are covering in school. This program is called "Classroom in Nature". They love it!

Our students come from a huge NYC school (1850 students) that is one of the most culturally diverse in the country.

Most are economically depressed and have problems getting the most basic supplies needed for school. The school gets little funding and has to make do with what is available. Despite the inherent problems, the students are eager to explore and become interested in the world once they are introduced to it in unique ways. Through many donations our trips are funded, allowing our inquisitive students to be part of the "Classroom in Nature" series which encompasses all of their major subjects.

My Project

I use many techniques to guide the students through the woods on these educational trips. The one that garners the most interest is the compass, topographical map, and using my mountaineering skills. They have repeatedly asked to learn the skills to move through the woods and understand the lay of the land better. This would instill within them a sense of pride, understanding, and independence. The materials are a learners kit (pack of 24) of compasses which would be used to teach them the orienteering skills utilizing the hands-on technique.

The skills and confidence that will be gained translate to many different areas of these students' lives.

The new found abilities will help in the Earth Science classes with map skills which are necessary for the Regents Exam. The addition of expertise in this area will lead to a deep sense of self and self-reliance.
