My Students

I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what is really important. That is students and their learning. Whenever possible, I stop by Starbucks on college campuses because it is where you see students in their natural element: learning, communicating, and experiencing. Imagine that for elementary kids!

We strive for hands-on, real-world experiences to instill important life lessons.

Our classroom isn't about pencils, paper, and tests to learn!

You might think that a school within walking distance of the world's most beautiful beaches has everything it needs. However, a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. As a tourist community, a lot of our parents have seasonal jobs, and things get tight during the off-season. That doesn't stop our students from aiming high. We are a "Leader in Me" school, so we set and track goals weekly. We live by the 8 Habits. Our students have ambitious goals, and their aspirations will stop the cycle of generational poverty. We have future astronauts, presidents, and doctors. As a smaller school, we know most of our students so we're able to hit the ground running on day one of the new school year.

My Project

Classroom trends come and go. One that is growing in popularity due to being research-based is to replace overstimulating bold classrooms with environments that are more like "home". Our students have been through the trauma of Hurricane Michael last October, and we are dealing with more mental health crises and post-traumatic stress than ever before. We wish to transform our bright orange, artificially lit classroom with something more welcoming and relaxing.

The items on our wishlist have been carefully chosen to transform our classroom into a learning environment that we can use year after year.

The futons and covers, tables, rugs, chairs, and other decor such as shiplap contact paper will be used in our flexible seating, student-led daily routines. Cool, calm colors have been selected, along with a more natural palette. We want to help students as they adjust to our "new normal" in our storm-ravaged town.
