Help Ms. Varlet

Dear Donor, I teach a 1st - 3rd grade grade Special Day Class for students with speech and language delays in a school in the Bayview/Hunter's Point neighborhood of San Francisco, where 65% of students receive a free or reduced lunch. Because of my students' various processing disabilities, they succeed best when taught in small groups and with a variety of learning strategies including visual and kinesthetic. I want to create a classroom economy for my students to gain fluency with concepts of money by using multi-sensory strategies and real-life application. In this project, I will create a classroom economy where students will have the opportunity to earn different amounts of money based on the positive contributions that they make to the class: coming on time, completing homework, keeping their hands to themselves, and working hard in various subjects. They will set goals for the amount of money that they would like to make, track their earnings on a graphic organizer, cash in a weekly check into the classroom bank to receive play money, and save to spend their money on choice activities or small prizes at the classroom store biweekly. Students will be assigned to run the Class Bank and Store in rotation. This project will reinforce my students' skills with counting, adding, and making change in a very concrete and motivating way, which will also support excellent behavior. In order to get this project started, I will need a set of play money to be used in the Classroom Bank and in the Classroom Store, along with trays to organize the money. I will also need a pocket chart with large coins to use for instruction and as a student center. Along with these materials, I am also requesting items such as money dice, money dominoes, a money board game, and flash cards for students to build fluency with money concepts in independent centers. Finally, I have requested children's books on the subject and a play snack shop with food for students to use money while role playing buying and selling things in a store. I know that by using these varied multi-sensory activities, my students will become confident problem-solvers with money. You can help us to start this project early in the year and continue it year-round. What better way to stimulate students to be confident with money and to reinforce their positive behavior at the same time? I hope that you will be able to support my students in improving these key skills. Thank you in advance!
