My Project

This year 5th grade students have been diving into financial literacy through budgets, goal setting, and learning to become responsible spenders. They have worked through an online program, learning about Income and Careers, Budgeting and Spending, and overall understanding of money while looking to the future.

I want to help my students to put their learning to the test by building a classroom store full of items of varying costs to encourage thoughtful budgeting and purchasing decisions.

I have created a classroom banking system to track purchases and savings accounts, but building a classroom banking system only works if students have the incentive to earn wages by having enticing items in a classroom store. By watching my students at Book fairs and observing their snacks, I have complied a list of their most popular picks for awards. Food items are always a favorite but also needed school supplies such as headphones and pencils that are different than the standard are a hit. Fidgets and other small toys as well as novelty items that can sit on their desks also provide a sense of pride as they show other students they have earned money and made choices on how to spend it.
