"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think," Albert Einstein. I have the privilege to train forty, beautiful minds in a variety of scientific topics with the hope of engaging their minds to think throughout their lives.
My students are fun and energetic children with a passion for learning.
They love to participate in classroom discussions and engage in meaningful ways. Many of our students have rough home situations and come from high poverty families where their higher level thinking skills are not supported. Over the past few years, I have seen a decrease in social and emotional tolerance from my students. I am sure some of the struggles stem from these young children dealing with the effects of COVID-19. As a whole, my class is very cute, but they also really struggle with basic social skills and regulating emotions. When you add in gaps in learning, helping students to progress and grow this year has been quite a difficult task.
My Project
Several of my students struggle with regulating their emotions and I hope to be able to reinforce important character development by reading the books I've requested to my class. Some of the character lessons I want to focus on with my students include acceptance and kindness to all. These books will give me a great place to start! Another reason I want to focus on positive character, is because of my students' quick rise of frustration when things start to get hard. I have noticed a huge increase of this since the COVID-19 pandemic began. To help limit frustration, I would like to add some organization items to my classroom. This includes class and student paper bins, mechanical pencils for every student, and just overall. a simple and straightforward classroom setup so students know exactly where things are.
I have seen huge successes in allowing kids to work towards small prizes throughout my week.
As a school, we have really tried to increase our positive reinforcement and decrease our negative reinforcement this year. My students work towards rewards throughout the week, and then they can receive them on Fridays. The sticky ball dart board will be used in conjunction with our reward program. Each Friday, students will have the opportunity to throw balls they earned throughout the week. They will then receive a small reward based on where the ball lands. Many of the small items in this project will serve as small rewards and prizes to help keep this crucial motivation alive!
