My Students
In my classroom one sees a high-energy lesson taught with passion and enthusiasm. I am always thinking about and searching for creative ways to engage my students in the learning process. I want students to grow a love for history and a love for learning while fostering creativity.
My students are very diverse.
They come from a variety of backgrounds and many speak multiple languages. They come to me with various levels of readiness. Some are already achieving at high levels and need to be challenged to use their knowledge in various ways. Others step into my classroom unable to read on grade level. They want to succeed and do well, but need teachers who will engage them in learning and support them as needed. I seek to meet their needs by providing engaging lessons, encouraging creativity and independence, affirming them when they are successful, and promoting a positive, safe learning environment.
My Project
For several years, our students have re-enacted the Battle of Gettysburg. Having the Civil War costumes will allow this re-enactment to be more 'real' for my students. After the battle, one of my teammates or I recite the Gettysburg Address. How cool would it be, how deeper the understanding my students will have, if one of us could also dress as Abraham Lincoln for this event!
I also want other costumes to use throughout the year to engage students in learning.
There are other times throughout the year in which it would be appropriate and entertaining to wear other costumes. When I teach about Plymouth it would be great to dress as a pilgrim. When my students have their mock Constitutional Convention, how awesome would it be if I dress as George Washington! Other costumes would also come in handy through the course of the year.
My project won't just keep kids engaged and promote learning in the classroom.
It will show them that I'm willing to do what I've asked them to do, that is, to step out of their comfort zones, take risks, and demonstrate courage. It will encourage other teachers to enhance their lessons and perhaps spark their creative engines as well.
