My Students

Nine-year-olds are eager to learn but they can only sit still for so long. My students have their pencils and notebooks out on their desk ready for our next lesson while my computer is loading, loading, loading, and their attention is gone before we have even begun.

My students are enthusiastic, curious, critical thinkers.

They are all very different; some with autism, several in gifted and talented, and a few English language learners. However, they all share the same thirst for knowledge and come eager to learn! At our school 40% of the students are on free or reduced lunch but 100% of our students are eager to meet the challenges of a rigorous and engaging curriculum. Every student is held to high expectations and supported as they soar to their full potential. Our entire building is charged with positive energy and a spirit of team work.

My Project

The teacher computers at my school are 8 to 10 years old. They are agonizingly slow and frequently crash in the middle of a lesson. I constantly use my classroom computer for everything from interactive science models to math games to audio clips of classical literature. Not to mention parent emails, entering grades and creating lesson materials after school hours. My preparation time and my instructional time with my class is being eaten up by my slow processor. If I had a new computer I could keep up with the speed of a nine-year-old attention span.

It is essential for students to use and understand current technology.

Using technology enlivens the classroom and captures their interest. The qualities of the tools I have affect the quality of my lesson and the quality of their learning. My students deserve the very best, most current tools to reach their educational goals.
