I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We currently have four Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.
We have a big goal this year .
. . to create a multi-sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use. This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.
My Project
Having a quality classroom carpet would not just help to create a comfortable meeting area for our diverse group of learners but it will also help to change the classroom environment for the better. Sitting on a hard and sometimes cold cement floor can be disagreeable especially for medically fragile children. A brand new carpet will trap allergens and other particles that fall to the floor so they don’t circulate in the air resulting in less dust in the “breathing zone.”
This particular carpet will be the heart of our classroom!
Utilizing this carpet as the main centerpiece of the classroom will also offer pleasant support to teaching staff who are constantly on their feet not to mention helping to keep the heat in the classroom during the colder months of the year. This carpet is designed to offer students designated places to sit making meetings more organized and fun.
