My Students

My students dream BIG but we are running out of supplies! This time of year, we are running out of markers, pencils, paper, EVERYTHING! All of my staplers are broken, even if my kids have become experts at fixing them. With these basic school supplies, my kids can keep working!

I teach three 8th grade classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' middle school.

Extra money is not something that my students and their parents/guardians regularly have, if ever. I try to make my school supply list very short, knowing that I will eventually end up buying notebooks, pencils, erasers and such out of my own pocket to help out some students. I cannot "require" my students to continually purchase additional supplies as they dwindle, dull, break, and become misplaced as middle school kids just lose things. My 8th graders will create high school portfolios that they will bring with them on interviews that will determine their future successes. Art and writing go hand in hand at our school. Once complete with their portfolios, my artistic students love to design cover pages for them, incorporating media and design elements by which they are inspired.

My Project

With a consistent supply of classroom basics, my students have the tools they need to finish strong. They could create artistic masterpieces (while learning English!) that will supplement their high school applications, allowing them to stand out from the crowd. I am requesting charcoal pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, paper and highlighters, all of which will serve my students in the creation of their writing portfolios for high school. The school at which I work is specifically lacking in the ability to provide students with access to basic materials in a sustainable fashion.

When my students have consistent access to basic supplies their outlook will be positively affected in that they will be empowered to confidently create portfolio pieces that will display their art and writing prowess.

They will be able to express their unique selves artistically and show their classmates examples of their hard work and dedication.
