In a high school computer science classroom, little things can make a big difference! This project combines many small purchases needed to make my classroom more accessible to students.
Students developing deep focus and analytical engineering skills benefits from a quiet, safe environment, where their distractions are limited, their safety is supported, and their tools and resources are clearly labeled.
To create this environment, I am asking for individual student earbuds, so that students can listen to videos without disturbing the acoustic environment around them. These tiny devices can help students focus, and support students working in different learning, modalities, and at different levels. The cord cover makes the classroom more accessible by eliminating a tripping hazard at the front of the classroom, where students daily walk over a power cord. The TN 660 and color ink cartridges support students who are visual, learners, and who are motivated by beautiful images and displays, or in-hand (rather than on-screen) resources. The acrylic display will enable us to clearly labeled classroom resources that are available for all students, which normalizes reading instructions and documentation for the world around us (essential, technology, education, skills). While students mostly work on laptops, but we have some larger monitors, and displays which require combination locking cables to remain safe in the classroom is unattended, or used by guest instructors.
Everyday items like batteries, lightbulbs, adapters, and Band-Aids help create a classroom where students feel supported because the things they need to engage their creativity and realize their visions are available for their use. Students with cut skin should have Band-Aids. Students working on a robot should have task lighting. And students who are building circuits should have batteries to help them illuminate their creations.
