Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Ethnic Studies & Global Studies in a diverse, high-poverty neighborhood. Our school is a diverse public high school: 38% Hispanic, 18% Black/African American, 4% Asian, 3% Pacific Islander, 7% Multiracial, 4% Native American, and 29% Caucasian.

I have amazing students who use their diversity and life experiences to their advantage.

Many of my students struggle with challenges outside of school. Many of our students are below the poverty line. Many students are in the foster care system or are homeless. Many are recent immigrants learning English as a second language. They are excited to boost create social change in our community.

My Project

My students are truly amazing. They are kicking butt and motivated and brilliant. Unfortunately, a lot of them lack the means to acquire some supplies that will help enrich their learning. From notebooks to scissors to highlighters, these supplies will help them create their class journals. We use our journals to reflect on our heavy topics like colonialism and climate change. We glue in relevant news stories or worksheets. We write interior monologues--putting ourselves in the perspectives on changemakers in history. We go over our notes and highlight the main themes that allow us to write our essays. We ask questions or give our reactions to images on sticky notes. Please help my students organize their ideas into beautiful artifacts.
