Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most people have experienced the ups and downs of being an adolescent. But my students have also experienced fear and violence and have had to leave their friends, family, and country to make the journey to the U.S. Here, they don't know the language or culture and are living with new family members. My students are from India, Vietnam, China, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Palestine, and the Philippines. They often have painful and traumatic pasts, but together they support each other and maintain hope for a better future.

Many of my students risked their lives to have a better future here, and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best selves and achieve their dreams.

These immigrant youth want to be successful students and contribute to their families and communities. All young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities, make decisions about their futures, and reach their potential. I have been teaching recently arrived immigrants since 2015 and their resilience and determination continues to impress and encourage me every day.

My Project

I plan to use these graphic novels in the second part of our first unit about values and identity. I taught most of these students last year in the previous course, and we read three graphic novels: American Born Chinese, Frankenstein and Romeo & Juliet. These were highly engaging and exciting to read for students, even those that were reluctant readers.

Graphic novels are a great way to support English Language Learners while they are expanding their vocabulary and increasing their comprehension skills.

The book will allow us to discuss and write about identity, race, and self-image. It provides many opportunities to discuss fear, hate, and racism, which most of my students have experienced. It will also help provide some historical background about the US that many new immigrants aren't familiar with, specifically around slavery and racism.
