My Students

"Let's Move". Two very simple, yet powerful words spoken by First Lady Michelle Obama. My sixth grade students come from a low income rural area of Muskegon, Michigan and they need to MOVE! Having fun while exercising is a sure way to encourage students to participate in a group workout.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds but a majority them receive free and reduced lunch and do not get many choices when it comes to nutrition and exercise.

We have close to 700 students in our building and I teach close to 200 sixth graders. We have a fitness club but we are limited on the choices of activities. Kids in middle school need to move, but many need to be motivated to do so especially with the long winters in Michigan. We also have some students with special needs, especially sensory issues. They are seeking a sensory input and need to move frequently to learn and grow to their fullest potential.

My Project

Do you remember middle school? It is not easy being a "tween" these days, but one thing that has not changed is how much they love to move and have fun while learning. Using the Shaun T Exercise DVD set will give my students the opportunity to do both. In our exploratory class called "Making Healthy Choices" students will be able to work out together and encourage and challenge each other while following a fitness program. Kids can relate to this video set because the music and moves relate directly to adolescents.

This donation will make a difference in the lives of over 200 students.

Students will work out, track their progress and see healthy changes in their life style choices. I cannot control what students do at home but giving them the chance to work out in a safe, fun school environment will hopefully help them develop a pattern for making exercise part of their daily routine. I plan to do this at the end of each day.
