My Project

One of the signature activities of my U.S. Government class is the "Citizen Action Project" (CAP). Essentially the CAP encourages students to learn about government by "doing" and with a hyper-local focus. Through the course of the semester students receive CAP "credit hours" by participating in approved CAP activities. These activities can include things like attending a local Assembly meeting, corresponding with a public official about an issue important to them, interviewing a public official, volunteering for a cause or candidate of their choice and much more! They are asked to put together a portfolio of their reflections and collections of related artifacts of their learning into a binder.

The CAP presents some obvious logistical challenges but it has been well received in previous years and recognized as a great learning experience by former students.

I am requesting the binders because it will allow our classes to break this semester long project into smaller tangible pieces that we can work on together as a class, as opposed to succumbing to the far too common urge to wait until the last minute to throw something together (any former or current student knows that "urge"). For many of my students, the $3 to $5 to purchase the binder can be cost prohibitive, so in the name of equity, I would like to provide the binders, with your help. On a related note, you should know that one of the "Citizen Action Project" traditions is that most former students leave their binders so that future students can draw inspiration and likely use previously used binders. Lastly, the calendars will help me list various events and opportunities the students can attend to earn credit.
