Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Although many of my students were eager to lead this project, Jeanie, Samuel, Gianna, and Miranda have been selected to lead and represent the student body. Our Goal: To increase the amount of science equipment so that we can better achieve STEM standards and be college and career ready!

Before learning about each body system, students explore the topic through guided research questions. Through their online inquiry, students became particularly interested in stethoscopes and how blood typing works. I encouraged students to take an active role in generating their own grant proposal on DonorsChoose.org so that we could possibly receive materials for studying such topics. These resources will allow us to successfully practice science and explore the human cardiovascular system. This project will help build upon my students’ interest in the medical field. So many of my students have expressed to me that they would like to pursue a medical degree. And the amazing thing is that I can see many of them as doctors!

The blood typing kit will provide my students with a hands-on approach to learning how blood typing and transfusions work. Through an applied learning approach, students will execute a scientific procedure that represents a real life situation. Stethoscopes will help my students learn how to find and take their heart rate. In groups, students will actively perform experiments that test different factors that affect pulse rate. Through these activities, students will learn advanced scientific content, lab skills, teamwork, and real-life problem solving. I am confident that my students will begin to realize that they are scientists and that science is all around them all the time! In an era where college and career readiness is a prominent factor in the teaching and learning process, STEM education is becoming more and more important. I know that my students will achieve greater learning outcomes, given access to such materials and content that will encourage them to think deeply.

In Their Own Words

We aim to increase the amount of science equipment used in our class so that we can better learn and practice science in a more advanced way. Many of us and our classmates are really interested in becoming doctors and nurses. Although we are learning a lot about the human body, we have not been able to do many advanced lab procedures using more sophisticated science equipment. These supplies will help us know how to handle certain medical emergencies and understand what happens in hospitals.

We will use the materials given to complete a variety of complex experiments that follow the scientific method. One of the experiments we plan on executing would involve testing how heart rate is affected by gender, and a variety of settings. A method of execution will be developed in collaborative groups, without the guidance of a teacher. We will create data tables, graphs and publish our findings so that we can collaborate with other scientists in other classes to further our understanding.

This project will help solve the hardships and challenges we face with a lack of equipment. With these supplies we can expand our knowledge on the topic in a fun and creative way. The project is important to us because it can take our knowledge further so that we can be more prepared for high school, college, and future occupations. We have been researching STEM based careers and we are confident that this equipment will help our generation become more interested in these types of professions.
