My students need the Cinderella stories in different cultures, this unit helps emphasize that all people have more similarities and respect for each others cultures.
Students in my classroom develop a sense of responsibility to be the best learners they can become. We use creativity and inquiry in project based learning. Part of my Educational Philosophy is to assist the students is autonomy, mastery and purposefulness in their participation in learning.
My students are in the 6th grade and are Honors/Gifted classes.
The make-up of the class is Hispanic and African American. This is a public school in a urban area in California. We have 95% free lunch program. The school now has breakfast in the classroom. (I have found it is a tool to effect community building between myself and the students.) My students describe themselves as: thinking, outstanding, cooperative, intelligent, curious and creative. These children are bright and love to explore the world. They are readers and will appreciate reading the different stories. My students have to create their own determination to learn and become successful academically.
My Project
Cinderella emerges in many versions from around the world. Immortalized in books and movies, Cinderella finds a prince from Mexico, China, India and all points in between. Her wealth and beauty, found in many different ways, allow the world to see the journey from rags to riches, from servitude to gratitude, as selfless passage. Regardless of Cinderella's persona, each fairy tale shares a common language and big ideas, particular details and patterns of literary elements and writer's craft. Each fairy tale explores rules of the culture and time period, and trends to style or clothing.
The students will journal their journey through the world with this fairy tale. They will explore figurative language and poetry ~ learn about different parts of the world. Though the research ~ they will craft their own voice to create their own version of the story.
I believe this project can use an in-depth look at this fairy tale.
It will provide students opportunities to think, write, draw, and discuss in ways beyond the knowledge level questions to deeper thinking supported by each level of depth and complexity. The students can critically analyze and evaluate each version, to seek evidence for their responses ~ as they support their opinion about the stories.
They will see they can accomplish and create a story they are proud of.
