Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the thrill of being onstage in a school play? My students need to discover the joy of performing through the story of Cinderella.

My students are amazing children with enthusiasm and curiosity to spare.

They love to learn and they love to perform. They attend a high poverty school in New Jersey that does not have a budget for theater arts. Our student body is 80% Hispanic and 20% African American.

My Project

If my students are lucky enough to receive this musical theater workshop, it will make a BIG difference. Approximately 75 children from 2nd through 8th grade will get to work with a musical theater expert and, over the course of a week, perform a production of Cinderella that will be open to all the students, parents, and neighborhood. They will learn how to act and sing onstage as well as how to derive joy from performance. They will make themselves, their families, and the community proud.

In a climate where the pressure to score well on standardized tests is felt by students and teachers, it is easy to cut out exciting and joyful educational opportunities that should really be a part of every student's elementary and middle school experience.

If my students get to put on a production of Cinderella, they will experience the thrill of working as an ensemble and being in a beautiful performance. It will be a memory that they will have for the rest of their lives.
