Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our school is in a small town farm community, and it is a Title I school. Our population is primarily (80%) Hispanic. We are on the outskirts of a large city and have seen some of the "big city" problems edge their way into our community.
My students love to learn and discover new ideas and things, but they have hardly any exposure to any types of art.
Most have done nothing more than draw very simple pictures and patterns. Even color schemes are a new idea for them.
My Project
As most of my students are Catholic, I thought it would be exciting for them to create stained glass pieces similar to what they see at church. I want to show them how it is done. I am hoping this will give them more of an appreciation for the skills needed and the time it takes, perhaps challenging them to look closer at the art inside their own lives.
Additionally, a secondary goal is to introduce them to a media that can be inspirational and detailed, causing them to slow down and work together for the completion of a common goal and perhaps find a community project that they can work together to complete and create some unity within the student body.
We need stained glass class kits and cutters to allow this to happen.
