Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are primarily diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Many of them have multiple disabilities. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.

My Project

Many of the students I serve are diagnosed with ASD. All children learn better when motivated. Students with ASD often have very specific motivators. Materials with specific characters, like Thomas the Tank Engine and Micky Mouse are often requested by the students. They want to play with them. With a little prompting language skills develop out of that play. They will learn how to ask for a specific Thomas train car while playing. They will learn how to follow directions with the Yo Gabba Gabba Nesting Dolls. They will learn how to identify functional items for the weather with the Colorforms Weather set.

We need materials that will motivate my student to want to learn and use functional language skills so that they can communicate outside of school.

Research shows that children develop a lot of language skills during play. My ASD students will be doing the same thing with items they enjoy in a guided play environment during speech therapy. The materials will help build requesting skills, expanding the length of their utterances, and taking turns or sharing ... all things we need to function outside of school too.
