This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My co-counselor and I are beginning a group to support our students with chronic stress. Students will learn strategies to manage their feelings, think clearly and process traumas that impact their daily lives. With the use of self-soothing techniques, a warm environment and a curriculum to support their journey, we hope to bring our middle school students reprieve, coping skills and tools to grow as young adults.

Sensory tools will be used to help students be mindful, present and work through their feelings and thoughts.

Snacks will be used to give nourishment and breaks from the difficult work they are engaging in during group sessions.

Northwest Middle School is one of few remaining middle schools in Chicago. We serve 530 students, the majority of whom are low income. Approximately half of our population are English language learners, many are new to this country. Our goal is to serve as many students as possible suffering from chronic stress and trauma.
