My Students

My students this school year are coming into the start of a new year with Mr. Miller. Their hopes are high that we will do some amazing project. A project to be remembered for the rest of their lives. One of the best aspects about being a teacher is that we are constantly evolving and trying to be the best model for our children. These students come from very loving and attentive families that obviously want the best for their child. As a sort of surrogate father, my hopes are to help my students develop their critical thinking skills and to help initiate a conversation about the responsibilities they have as children of the United States of America.

The school itself is over 70% free or reduced lunch, and lots of my students come from a lower socio-economic background.

In my particular class, I have 14 boys and 15 girls. A few children are African-American, a couple are white, and the rest are Hispanic with the majority claiming Mexican heritage. Our town is known for growing tough kids who understand the value of hard work.

My Project

The Chromebooks I have chosen will be such an enormous asset in the classroom because right now our time is so limited in the computer lab. Education is trying to keep up with the age of information, and the donated Chromebooks will help my students create more opportunities to foster their education. My English Language Learners need this tool near them to help them navigate the ever increasing and challenging vocabulary that comes with middle school grades. All of my students will benefit from the extended time to use the Chromebooks in publishing their writing. They will also have access to websites like NewsELA.com and ReadTheory.org to help them understand standards based content and wrap their head around the confusing world of current events. My students will be able to access their teacher's website, and find recent statistical sports data from the University of Georgia, our featured university for this year. Students will the opportunity to access websites like KhanAcademy.org, where they can get help with understanding difficult standards. With regards to History, I can't begin to tell you what a great resource the Chromebook will be when we begin to access Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, the Great Wall, understanding ancient technology like the aqueduct of Rome, or the Babylonian's "Baghdad Battery." And as for Science, the world of several disciplines will open up for my students, and ultimately ignite a fire in their heart that only curiosity and careful observation can begin to quench.
