My Students

My students are high achievers, risk takers, questioners, eternal skeptics but wide open to all new experiences and information. They are active and engaged, and fully 21st century in their likes and activities. If they HAVE to be indoors, they want the lesson to be high tech and interactive.

Our classroom is noisy, messy, colorful, collaborative and hands-on.

My students are a highly engaged and intellectually active group who ask constant questions and love going outside.

As part of our curriculum, I integrate a large amount of computer models and general computing skills - using spreadsheets in science, graphing, simulation of scientific principles, etc. This grant will go a long way to assure a 1:1 ratio of students to computers.

My Project

I like for my classroom to be driven by student work. Whether a hands-on lab, research project, debate prep, or analysis of data, I expect that my students will be taking initiative and attempting, at least, to solve their own problems before coming to me for assistance. These computers will enable them to better attain this autonomy.

The laptop is fast becoming the de facto textbook of the science classroom, but with the opportunities available to conduct online labs, code scientific models, and interact with field researchers around the globe, they are much more.

My classes use the 12 laptops that we currently have to observe natural phenomena that we would never be able to see live, analyze oceanic and atmospheric data using Google Sheets, and prepare presentations and animations to educate one another on specific topics.

Beyond the specific scientific concepts that access to computers allows, my students will gain skills in general computing, spreadsheets, basic coding, and internet literacy - all of which are skills that many people incorrectly assume that every teenager possesses, and all of which are skills that will be necessary for most of them as they move into adulthood.

This project will greatly augment my classes' ability to access 21st century learning styles. At the moment, there are usually 3 to 4 students per computer. These 12 additional laptops will bring this ratio much closer to 1:1.
