My Students

My students range from Kindergarten to 5th grade and all have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some also have a Speech Impairment, Sensory Processing Disorder, and other cognitive disabilities. I support my students through social skills training, transition training, grade level academics, pre-requisite academics, behavioral expectations, emotional regulation training, and sensory concepts. I am a direct teacher for some students and an indirect teacher for others. I love my students; they are inspiring, hardworking, and the reason I choose to continue to teach!

My Project

As a special education teacher, I am not given the same amount of technology as general education teachers. My students love technology and often request time on a device as the reward for completing their work. This is a huge incentive for my students. They are able to access basic computer programs as well as fun and engaging math games, tons of read-aloud programs to enhance their reading fluency and exposure to various books, and a creative outlet that cannot be duplicated with paper and pencil.

My students need to start practicing computer etiquette now so that they will be successful later.

They may take longer than their peers in becoming efficient in technology-use because it can be so foreign. Learning how to type, move around a mouse, move around on a mouse-pad, plugging in earphones, keeping the device charged, and keeping the screen clean are now basic skills. These must be specifically taught to my students--if each student had a device, we would easily be able to accommodate their unique needs.
