My Students

My students are eleventh and twelfth graders who range in age from 16-19 years old. They attend a small, close-knit neighborhood high school in South Baltimore. They are a diverse group: they've come to our little part of the city from places like Colombia, El Salvador, Iraq, St. Louis, and California. Most have received special education services for the entirety of their academic careers. They are reading and writing anywhere from 3-10 years below grade level.

Students in my class have been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and autism, but they love reading and writing and are always excited to participate in class.

They consistently support and encourage each other, and they have worked hard to create a classroom environment where it's safe to take risks and make mistakes. Their enthusiasm and resilience inspires me every day.

My Project

My school tries its best to provide technology access to all students. However, our budget is limited, so each of our laptop carts has to be shared among several teachers and classrooms. The laptops that my students are assigned to use are aging significantly – many are missing keys and have trouble with charging, running programs, and connecting to Wi-Fi.

Having our own Chromebooks will enable my students to have reliable access to technology every single day.

Students already have email accounts through Google for Education, and so far this year they’ve all learned how to access Docs and Drive, locate and share files, and remember passwords. These Chromebooks will allow my students to continue working with these apps and hone critical Internet skills. They will also allow me to take more of my teaching online – students will be able to use Google Classrooms to respond to texts and interact with each other. Understanding how to learn via online platforms is becoming a critical college skill.

My school has access to a reading intervention program called Achieve 3000 that allows students to read and respond to short, engaging non-fiction texts at their own reading level. Regular work with this program has been proven to raise student Lexile levels. My students have enjoyed the program so far, but our current laptops cannot reliably run it.

Chromebooks will also enable my students to use technology to overcome obstacles related to their disabilities. Students would be able to listen to many of our classroom texts online, and they can download browser extensions in order to listen to Internet content and dictate essays and assignments. Understanding how to find and use these supports will foster feelings of independence and confidence in students who traditionally rely on me when a task is “too hard.”
