Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are making great strides in improving their reading comprehension. Many are up to four levels below their current grade. Our school has laptops for math, but none for language arts. My students, Gabriella, Elder and Phaion would greatly improve their comprehension through day to day use.
When our students get their progress monitoring data back, they are constantly asking for assistance in improving their reading levels. My students have shown a constant desire to improve from where they started early this school year, knowing there are many hurdles to overcome. One day they came in and started talking about what they learned in math using laptops that are afforded to them. The math program offers individualized Internet-based content, and works according to their levels, making adjustments as necessary. They remarked how they wished we had something like that in language arts. If my students can get that motivated about learning using laptops in math, I want that same thirst for them to come out in language arts. These Chromebooks would make the classroom experience a better one, helping to produce more focused learning while improving on all facets of their language arts curriculum.
The work my students contribute to has to have some buy-in; and if it is not taught explicitly, the skills are often not retained. Having an opportunity to utilize technology otherwise not afforded them provides a great opportunity for them to practice collaborative learning, improving their writing skills, and being a positive contributor to their community later in life. Learning what it means to be a leader and helping to develop 21st century skills that are real world, relevant and needed in future vocational settings is a must. Having the Chromebooks will help make that happen for our kids who so desperately need resources to help make them marketable in the real world.
In Their Own Words
This year, our school started a new math program, measuring our abilities in certain skills and concepts. We love working on the computer in math. When our language arts teacher told us about this program where we might be able to get new computers, we got excited. We can see daily and weekly how our skills and reading levels can improve and what our strengths and weaknesses are. Having that knowledge throughout the school year will only help to prepare us for other end of year tests.
We plan on taking charge with the five computers in the classroom. We will have a rotation of five students throughout the period and every student will be in charge of understanding what they need help in; and working on improving the weaknesses that we have. Our teacher has challenged us to be better, and we want to take that challenge. We want to grow more than any other school in our district and hope that we get the computers to help us do so.
This is important to us because it is our future at risk. Before this school year started we couldn't read and write so well. We have been encouraged and challenged to be better. Many of us come from a bilingual or English as a second language backgrounds and we are the only English speaking people in our home. Many of us want better lives than our parents have and we want to be role models for those who have less hope than we do. We see that by getting the technology we can have hope and pride.
