My Students

First grade is a pivotal grade for FOSTERING A LOVE OF LEARNING. Children learn in many different ways - through hands on learning, play and exploration, and the use of technology. This past year has proven to be a time that students must learn through technology. I believe a mix of all kinds of learning modes is beneficial.

My Project

My classroom does not have a designated set of devices for students to use. I'm hoping to change that this year by providing my 1st graders with at least two CHROMEBOOKS to use on a daily basis.

I have three PRIORITIES for utilizing chromebooks in my classroom:

- Improving READING FLUENCY

- Providing independent opportunities to use PHONICS AND MATH PROGRAMS

- Promoting a LOVE OF WRITTEN EXPRESSION through the use of technology.

Priority #1 - to help my students improve their READING FLUENCY. Specifically, chromebooks can allow my students to record themselves reading a story or passage that can be easily sent to me on Google Classroom. From there, I can track, monitor, and analyze a student's reading without taking up valuable class time that I could be meeting with small groups. My students could record themselves regularly and get to see their progress over time!

Priority #2 - to give my students the opportunity to use VALUABLE PHONICS AND MATH ACTIVITIES throughout the day (such as Starfall, Seesaw, and Xtra Math). Keeping my students engaged in educational activities while I'm working with other students is vital! I envision using the chromebooks as a learning station that students can visit daily.

Priority #3 - to enhance my students' WRITTEN EXPRESSION SKILLS. 1st graders love to draw pictures and write stories. This can be done in many different ways, one way being by using a program called Sketchpad on a chromebook. Students will love the opportunity to create their own stories and illustrations while using online tools.
