My Students

What Makes My Students Special?

When I first started at Pershing Middle School 18 years ago.

I was a fairly new teacher. I was raring to go and ready to change lives! I was determined to make a difference. I almost quit in December of that same year. My school is located in Houston, Texas and is Title One (1) and Title Three (3). This means that more than half of my students have free/reduced lunch and that we have a large enough population of students that are LEP (Limited English Proficient.) that we receive federal monies from the government. Being brought up in a middle class family with middle class values nor my college teaching classes prepared me for dealing with the problems that would come from teaching at a Title One (1) and Title (3) school.

I learned that they world in which I grew up did not mirror theirs and that the playing field was not level. What I love most about my school that almost had me quit in December of the first year is what I am most proud of now in my 18th year - DIVERSITY!

My Project

My first project on Donor's Choose asked for eight (8) Chromebooks. That project was just funded this week. I am now asking for a charging cart to charge and to keep them secure when I leave my classroom.

Providing a Chromebook storage cart will also support students with organizational skills, which are fundamental to the smooth running of a classroom.

It is important that the Chromebooks be kept organized and in a central location, so they are visible and easily located by students. This cart will be a valuable addition to the classroom by allowing us an easy transition when working in stations.
